What's the best way to preserve and prevent burning off of bluing on my muzzleloader?

Hello, My name is David O'Neal of Starks LA. and I have a question about my cva sidelock muzzleloader that I think you might be able to answer. First of all I'll start by telling you about my muzzleloader, it's an older sidelock percussion type muzzleloader and it tends to burn off bluing around the hammer area because of the heat. My question is besides bluing what other alternative is there to protect my barrel and can withstand high temperatures and keep that old style look. Any comments will be greatly appreciated

Thank You, David O'Neal

There is a black PTFE coating recommended for muzzle loaders which goes by the name of black ice. Check out chuckhawks website. Please don't do this to a valuable old gun.
I have a simpler solution. Before loading, wipe the nipple and surrounding area with a well greased patch.
If you are in the metal finishing industry, I can highly recommend Polishing Grease as the best patch lubricant. Soft in winter, does not melt in summer non corrosive to metals, stands high temperatures and costs next to nothing.
