Powder Coat Under Cured?

2006

Hello,

I have a set of automobile wheels that were coated at a local powdercoater, when I got them home, I was wiping some light dust off of them using a soft terry cloth towel, and I noticed the dust was making very noticeable scratches into the powder finish.......... This is not normal is it? it seems like the powder was undercured, am I right?

Thanks in advance!

The coating should be more resilient than that, you might want to go back and discuss the problem with him.

Buy a quart of MEK / methyl ethyl ketone, soak a rag with it, and rub a small painted area that isn't visible when the wheel is installed. If the paint comes off, it's undercured, otherwise the cure is ok. This method will damage the appearance of the paint even if it's ok, all check methods for cure will damage the paint, but if you find that the paint comes off with MEK and show it to the coater, he can't argue with you, it's undercured, period.
