Negative effect on environment and social constraints of anodising

2005

I am a student attempting to find information on the Anodising Process with respect to the environment and social constraints placed on an engieering company.I need to understand the problems involved in Anodising, and be aware of the precaution that need to be undertaken by a company to meet relevant U.K and E.U environmental legislation.
I also need to investigate environment and social constraints in terms of engineering production & manufacture, engineering services like gas and electricity, also how are anodising materials handled, stored and transported.

Do you have access to any books that cover anodizing, Andrew? If so we could probably refer you to appropriate chapters. The best would probably be "Surface Finishing and Treatment of Aluminum and Its Alloys" by Wernick, Pinner, and Sheasby. I think your topic is way too broad for anything less than a PhD thesis. After you have read and learned about anodizing, you should be able to reduce the scope of your project to an area of manageable size, say, "Does chromic acid anodizing of aluminum have a future?" Good luck.

Wotcher Andrew,

I don't know what a 'strudent' is but because you are in or from Bristol, it sure seems to be a new word to Clifton college, snow that!

Anyone dealing with acids, alkalies or whattever means that yes, there could be some pollution. Consult your local authorities.

Consider something else, too, that nearly all plating type emissions are NOT fumes nor gases but invisible and mini micron sized droplets. There are some minor exceptions, nitric for one, but in bright dip cleaning of aluminum where the nitric isn't very strong, they are indubitably droplets which can be removed inertially.... using water, believe-it-or-not, as the wash-down system and will pass the local standards with flying colours.
