Stripping Paint from Staircase Spindles

Q. I am currently renovating an old victorian house and want to strip the many, many layers of paint from the banisters and spindles. Yes, the easy way would be to take the banister off and unscrew the spindles, but we believe this will cause irreparable damage, so is there any kind of product that will enable me to quickly and efficiently and safely remove paint in large sections which will actually peel off, say 5 or 6 layers at any one time?

A. Jane,

I have just done this with my banister. I used a heat gun this on eBay or Amazon [affil links] with a multipurpose scraper. It takes a while but the results are great.

Hope this helps.
