Researching corrosion of steel in marine environments
2005
I am currently doing a chemistry assignment on Corrosion of Steel.
The purpose of the report is to investigate steel and extensively analyse how the marine environment causes corrosion. This report will focus steel and discuss its physical and chemical properties that make it suitable for use in a marine structure such as a ship.
Would you be able to refer me to some useful sites or provide me with information on Corrosion of Steel And the methods to prevent steel corrosion in marine environment such as galvanising, cathodic protecting and apply organic coatings such as paint?

Before I answer your question, can you answer one for me? I'm hungry but concerned about sound balanced nutrition: would you recommend a six-pack of Snickers or a box of Crispy Creme donuts for my dinner? :-)
Unfortunately, although the internet is fast, convenient, and open 24 hours a day, it's disorganized, fickle, not peer reviewed, unauthoritative, and the wrong place for scientific research as of yet. Please go to a library instead. But if not, go to Amazon, limit your search to books, then use search terms like "marine corrosion", "seawater corrosion", "cathodic protection", and "galvanizing"; you'll find at least a few books that you can "search inside". Someday soon google and yahoo will have real books on line, and then you'll be able to do the kind of study you are looking at from your computer. It would be nice if public libraries could put the full text of their holdings on line, but I don't think any library has done it. Best of luck!
