What is Ebonal "Z" 80
I am trying to decipher an old drawing with a finish spec that states: Bright Zinc Electroplate, Ebonal "Z" 80. For some reason the cost for this plating is outrageous. Can someone please explain what Ebonal "Z" 80 is and also if there is a less expensive alternative. How does corrosion resistance and cost of black chromate compare? Thanks for your help.

Ebonol Z-80 is a black finish for zinc deposits manufactured by Enthone-Omi. It is a black finish and NOT a black chromate which is based on chromate and silver. Ebonol Z-80 is a a non chromate nickel based black finish with no special corrosion protection. The cost should not be too high and has to be less than a chromate finish based on silver.

Sara is right about the product and the source but wrong about the cost. The cost of part handling and other labor makes the difference in the chemical price of little difference in the total pricing of the finish. Similar products are available from other suppliers.
