S.F. bureau of architecture wants to paint galvanized steel
My question is: we can not paint stainless steel but can we paint galvanized steel (interior and exterior application). will paint stick very well if we paint galvanized steel? thank you.

Galvanized steel which is going to be painted should be specified as such at the time of order. That way the usual chromating step can be skipped or altered accordingly. The AGA calls this concept of painting galvanized finishes "Duplex coatings" and has free booklets or very nominally priced booklets with the hows and whys.
If an existing installation of galvanized metal is to be painted, it needs to be properly pretreated. Some readers has reported success from scrubbing with a tampico brush and trisodium phosphate

before applying a self-etching "galvanized primer" . . . but getting the AGA booklets is recommended.
