Design of Experiments Methodology, Why?

Dear Sir, Why do you choose DOE (Design of Experiments Methodology) for your mixture experiments instead of the OVAT (one variable at a time) classical approach?...my supervisor asked me. Can you help me answer that? Thanks Tahir Alzuhd>PhD student- part time University of hertfordshire/ mechaero college lane, Hatfield, herts AL10 9AB-- UK

In a nutshell, so that you may test many variables at a few levels, and be able, by the magic of statistics, infer a lot more information from the same amount of testing.

And, perhaps more importantly, be able to determine what if any interactions between variables may be present. As Professor Ben Stout (bless his heart) made us memorize in Plant Science 101: the definition of "interaction" is:

The failure of a response to one factor to be the same at different levels of another factor.

The failure of a response to one factor to be the same at different levels of another factor.

The failure of a response to one factor to be the same at different levels of another factor.
