How a powder coating oven operates
2004
Hi,
I work for a furniture company in ireland called Dunnes who specialize in MDF components. We are currently researching into the powder coating system and whether or not to buy it. The question I would like to know is how the oven works and is operated in the system. Any information would be gratefully appreciated. It is very hard to find any information anywhere on this subject.

Hi Jonathan,
Practically there are three oven systems used for curing powder on MDF:
1: UV radiation, where the powder has reactive components that are triggered by the UV radiation energy,
2: IR radiation, where the heating source are IR radiators (btw, normally also used as prehetsystem before UV curing)
3: Convection heating. The "standard" oventype working with hot air.
My advice is not to try to "invent the wheel once again" as we use to call it over here. Ovens for the curing of powdercoating are built for 40 years now. There is a lot of experience and knowledge available. Knowledge that can be used for the engineering of the ovens for this relatively new situation like powder on mdf. Therefore, make use of this experience, and don't waste your time, energy and money on something that already exists. And, if you don't have the knowledge of a certain technique, ask the person who has. You'll find a lot of them at this site.
Good luck,
