Does hydrofluoric react with titanium racks?

2004

Dear sirs,

Can you tell me if titanium reacts with hydrofluoric? I want to acid etch aluminum using a titanium rack but I think the solution with hydrofluoric may react with the titanium rack. I hope I am wrong.

Thank You,

You are right Ricardo. HF is strong etch for titanium.

Thank you for you answer.

How can I acid etch aluminum parts using a titanium rack if the HF that is used in the acid etch formulas reacts with the titanium of the racks?

Ricardo,

Ever thought of protecting the titanium?

Subject to temperature, the first way would be to have your racks plastisol coated. If this is just a one-time affair, than "paint" the racks with some PVC cement using the 'heavy' type. Anyhow, you could use the cement to touch up any scratches in the plastisol ... in which case I'd make the cement to a heavier consistency by adding PVC swarf ... Or you could get the racks coated with, say, PVDF ... superlative in acids, not so hep in alkalies.
