Stress relieving of magnesium to prevent warpage

2004

We are experiencing warpage issues with magnesium castings both after the die casting and post machining processes. We have heard that heat stress relieving magnesium parts can help improve or minimize this issue. Could you please comment on this and advise on what the correct procedure would be (i.e. oven temperatures, soak time, best time to stress relieve etc...)

Sincerely,

Barry Bowers

For die-cast Mg parts, the standard stress relief treatment is 1 hour at 260 °C. This will provides relief of residual stresses due to nonuniform cooling or solidifcation, without significantly affecting the mechanical properties of the casting.
