Plating etched zinc plates with steel or nickel

I would like to steel or nickel face a set of zinc etching plates to create a harder surface for a longer print run without deterioration or wear to the very fine surface textures of the plate. It is essential that the metal deposited on the zinc be very thin, or I will lose detail from the plates. Which metals might work on zinc for this purpose? How might I be able to do this? I would be very grateful for specific suggestions.

Sounds like a possible application for electroless nickel plating, Brian, but I believe chrome plating is often used for this.
