How to keep copper roof from oxidizing?

I am placing a copper finial on the top of my owner's house, however he does not want the copper to oxidize. He wants the shiny luster like new copper for life. I am not looking for maintenance free, but I looking for something that you only need to maintain once every five years or so. Any suggestions?

If there is any method of doing that, it should be available thru the builders or roofers network. My guess is that you would have to paint it with a clearcoat that was highly UV stabilized. I doubt if you want to carnuba wax and polish an entire roof.

You are both correct. The Copper Development Association has tested various clearcoats for this purpose: "Frequently, it is desired to preserve the original salmon or gold tones of copper or brass surfaces. This can be achieved by applying clear protective coatings. The coatings create a weather barrier and prevent the further oxidation of copper, brass and bronze surfaces. However, as with any coating, degradation over time will require the stripping and replacement of the clear coating. CDA has undertaken a comprehensive test program in order to determine the capabilities of commercially available clear coatings. Liquid and powder coatings, air dried and baked were tested. Refer to report no. A4027 Clear Coating on Copper Alloys."
