Aluminum ore transportation
Why does alumina or aluminum ore get transported large distances to be refined? In Australia why are the refineries so far away from the mines? Does it have to do with the amount of electricity needed to refine? I would have thought that it would be easier to transport the aluminum after refining.

Yes, it requires a lot of electricity. So it is a common practice to produce aluminum near power plants, unless you have an adequate power grid near the mine.
