What Causes Rusting?

2003

I am Marcial Villafor. My company is a buying agent for foreign buyers. We encounter problem in rusting of plated and lacquered hardwares traced in the destination or buyers site. I want to augment my meager information to shed light why such things happened.

Read the article on corrosion at this site. Main page, last item in 4, and corrosion.

I am about to buy a flat and I would like to know why rusting happens, because some of the radiators and hinges on doors are all rusted over. Please help me.

Kind regards,

Entire aisles of some technical libraries are devoted to corrosion and rusting, Aimee. But, in general, steel rusts due to oxygen in the air. At higher temperatures, in wetter environments, if exposed to salt, or if left unplated and unpainted it happens faster. What is it that you want us to do?

Aimee, don't buy the flat! If the hinges and radiators are rusting, it means the flat is very damp and this will cause you all sorts of problems, least of all when you come to resell it.
