Hi, Lisa. These days most brighteners and addition agents for nickel are proprietary trade secrets; moreover, they are not simple basic chemicals that you can make yourself, but they are synthesized from precursors (a process which is beyond the ability and equipment available to most people anyway).

However, there are older, non-proprietary primary brighteners, secondary brighteners, carriers, and surfactants that you can use. These topics are probably too broad to cover in an internet posting, but it is all very well explained in the ASM Metals Handbook, Volume 5, Surface Engineering.

If you are a chemical formulator with the ability to synthesize organic chemicals, you can search expired patents for information on such brighteners. Good luck!
