Etchant for d2 high carbon steel
I'm trying to etch d2 die steel. I've been using 1part nitric with
3 parts water. It worked at first, but its getting worse and worse.
(I regrind the end smooth, and re-etch it) I'm pretty sure I decarburized the surface when I heat treated it, which is why it etched initially. Nital eats my resist (as well as not working), so its right out.
Thanks,

I am looking for the correct chemical used to etch embossing dies. My understanding is that a 50/50 mixture of Nitric acid and water should be used, however this is not working for me... I am using hardened A2 and D2 steel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
