Electroless Chrome

Q. Has anybody heard of Electroless Chrome plating. I work in a job-shop, and the spec. calls for electroless chrome, but I never heard of such a thing. Can anyone help me (literature).

A while back, one company advertised an electroless chrome substitute with the word substitute in tiny type and displaced from the word chrome. It was an electroless cobalt which is very hard and looks a lot like chrome. James Watts

Dear MR Lee,

Many efforts had been done in this respect but limited industrial success obtained.

I have two formulas for electroless chrome.

acid one:
chromium acetate 30 gm/l
sodium citrate 40 gm/l
sodium glycolate 40 gm/l
sodium hypo phosphite 10-30 gm/l
sodium acetate 20 gm/l
nickel acetate 1gm/l P
H 4-6
TEMP. 100c
rate of deposition 1mil/hour

alkaline one:
chromic bromide 16 gm/l
chromic iodide 1 gm/l
sodium citrate 10 gm/l
sodium hypo phosphite 10 gm/l
sodium oxalate 9gm/l
PH 8-10
temp. 75-90
rate of deposition .3 mil/hour
