Removal of glass bead blast residue

Dear Gentlemen,

After having glass bead blast AA6061 and AA6063 parts to obtain the desired surface texture, there appears a film on the parts due to the residue of silicon from broken glass. When scratching the surface with the fingernail, the nail and finger becomes dark gray, appearing like pencil lead.

My question now, is there a way to clean the parts chemically before bringing them to the anodizer and without damaging the blasted surface? If possible with no or little acid? Or any other method?

I kindly appreciate any information or hints.

Thank you,

Hans J. Preisendanz

Probably the best way to clean any blast finished part is to use an ultrasonic tank cleaning system. Not only will it remove residue covering, but it will remove imbedded glass or abrasive media particles. Normally water will work just fine; however, to improve cleaning, a chemical additive with a wetting agent is recommended.
