Seeking alternative to amorphous fumed silica as gelling agent for brush plating
We currently use a compound called amorphous Fumed Silica [affil links] in order to gel a gold brush plating solution. since I am unlucky enough to have the job of gelling the gold, I was wondering if there is some sort of other agent we can use to gel this material. The fumed silica works great to thicken the liquid, but it comes out of solution and basically turns back to liquid when it gets below 40 degrees and it also is very light, just touch the bag it is in and the whole room clouds up with dust. Is there a heavier material with a heavier consistency, similar to salt or sugar, that gels liquid and has no shelf life? Thanks a lot,

A. Rob Henry, you can use thixotropic agents to thicken the gold solution without problem,

Hi. I think Rob's question is what is the generic chemical name for the thixotropic agent that you are speaking of?

RFQ: I am looking for a substance by the brand name of "Aerosol 200" which is amorphous fumed silica that produces static charge when frictionalised.
Could anyone please introduce me to a source for this item
Thanks.
