How to remove brass plating from stainless steel door handle?

I have maybe an odd question, but I have a door handle and lock combo. It's an odd size so will be difficult to replace without refinishing the door. My issue with it is that the brass plate (assuming plate) finish is pretty worn, worn through completely in some spots. It's stainless underneath. I have no need for a brass look on the door, and some of my neighbors have replaced theirs with nickel and stainless (usually with a huge replacement due to the issue with matching holes). How do I remove the remainder of the brass plate? One suggestion I heard was steel wool. Thnaks in advance.

Sorry! Finishing.com is temporarily Read-Only.
Ted Mooney is retiring but I have several offers to take it over.
We're working hard to make sure we find it the best new home.
