-----Trivalent chromate conversion questions?
Dear experts,
I am using tri-valent chromate conversion plating for the first time and have several questions.
1. How can I check the thickness of the chrome conversion on the zinc plated parts? (x-ray?)
2. Is it chrome metal on the zinc plated parts surface?
3. How can I check the chrome level in the solution? (by AA?)
I'm new in this industry. Our job-shop currently Zinc plate these steel part to 8 microns, and they are dipped into a trivalent chrome conversion solution for approx. 20 sec at room temp at pH of 1.8. We have two types of trivalent chrome solution, one is light blue and other is rainbow. My question is, how does one know if the chrome coating is trivalent or hexavalent chromium. The two are totally different. Is there some test that can be performed to determine if it's tri or hex? Thank you for your help.
