-----Electropolishing Facility Lighting Questions
1998
Hello!
I was wondering if anyone has information regarding the type of lighting one would use in an electropolishing facility. Specifically, what type of fixture should be used and how bright should the illuminance be? Are there constraints concerning the distance from the ceiling to the light and its fixture? And then from the light and its fixture to the manufacturing shop floor? Any lighting layout suggestions?
Thanks!

Dear Kristen:
I feel metal halide lights are best. They generate a nice white, not orange, light; they are energy efficient; they can be mounted up near the ceiling, out of harm's way.
The minimum distance from ceiling to fixture, if there is one, would be information supplied by the manufacturer of the fixtures, and would probably be based on concern about heat buildup, or wiring access. Usually, this would not be specified by the owner or architect, but would be an installation detail left to the electrician. Remember that these lights will shine down, and you don't want a 'black hole' up above the lights, so you'll probably have them as near the ceiling as practical.
Find the range of recommended candlepower/foot-lumens listed in a handbook, and pick the HIGHEST. The overwhelming majority of finishing shops are far too dark.
You may also want an inspection station with its own fluorescent lighting. These lighting/painiting arrangements for inspection stations, if not off-the-shelf, are at least well documented.

I am working on a facilities project for college. I need to know which lights are best for a facility, above is stated metal halide lights. How do I find out how far they need to be spaced apart, how much foot/candles or foot/lumens are needed? I appreciate any assistance.
Thank you,
